Built for British Columbia

Penticton metal roofing: a roof that cannot rust.

BC is a coastline, a rainforest, a snow belt and a fire zone, sometimes on the same drive. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

There is no iron in aluminum, so there is nothing to rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched. That is why it is the metal for oceanfront homes, island cabins and anywhere the wind carries salt.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel. On our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum itself does not ignite. Ask us to quote the assembly if your home backs onto forest or grassland.

Reflectance

Reflectance, rated colour by colour

Most Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), which publishes each colour's solar reflectance (0.25 to 0.44 when new) and thermal emittance (0.83 to 0.86). Lighter and metallic colours reflect more. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Energy

Colour and summer heat

Lighter colours absorb less summer sun than dark ones. What that saves depends on climate, colour, insulation and attic ventilation, so we don't quote a figure.

Solar

The roof to put solar on

A solar array lasts 25 to 30 years. Put it on an asphalt roof and the panels often have to come off and go back on when the roof wears out underneath them. On an Interlock roof they come off at the end of their own life, not the roof's. Standing Seam takes clamp mounts with no holes drilled; the other profiles use mounting hardware made for metal roofing. At roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre the roof leaves more of the structure's capacity for the array, and your solar installer confirms the framing.

Wind

Locked on four sides

Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides, with no exposed fastener for a storm to work at. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Coastline: Province of British Columbia, Coastal Marine Strategy ↗ gives "more than 26,000 kilometres"; federal mapping gives 25,725 km. Product figures are the manufacturer's: interlockroofing.com ↗

    Why aluminum roofing, for Penticton

Heat, smoke season and a little snow. What that asks of a Penticton roof.

    Heat

    Long, hot summers

At Penticton Regional Airport the average July high is 29.2 °C (1991–2020 climate normals), and the record is 44.2 °C, set on June 30, 2021. A roof here spends months in hard sun. Aluminum has no asphalt to dry out and no granules to wash into the gutters, and it cannot rust.

    Wildfire

A city with a wildfire history

FireSmart BC notes Penticton's history of frequent wildfires, including the 1994 Garnet fire and the 2020 Mt. Christie fire, and new neighbourhoods reaching into the wildland-urban interface. Our fire rating is Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, and aluminum itself does not ignite. No roof is fireproof: embers still reach gutters and vents, so we go over those with you.

    Snow

    Not much snow, but some

The airport averages 61.6 cm of snow a year in the same normals. On a metal roof that snow does not sit and melt; it slides off in one go. So we mark the spots over steps, decks and driveways where snow guards belong when we draw up the estimate.

    Weight

A light roof on the rafters

Interlock® panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per m², a fraction of what cedar shakes or concrete tile weigh. When we look at a house in Penticton, Kaleden or Okanagan Falls, the old roof and the framing under it are part of the estimate. Interlock® Shake and Interlock® Cedar Shingle keep the look of wood without the wood.

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

    Straight answers

Penticton aluminum shingles: the questions we hear most.

    All of our answers ↗

    Which communities does pentictonroofing.com cover?

The City of Penticton, plus Kaleden on the west shore of Skaha Lake and Okanagan Falls at its south end. Naramata, Summerland and the rest of the Okanagan and Shuswap are covered at okanaganroofing.com. It is one company: same crews, same warranty.

Do you install metal shingles and aluminum shingles in Penticton?

Yes, that is all we install. Interlock® Slate, Interlock® Cedar Shingle, Interlock® Shake and Interlock® Mediterranean Tile are interlocking aluminum shingles; we also install Interlock® Standing Seam and solid copper. Your roof needs at least a 3/12 slope for them. We take off the asphalt, cedar or tile; we don't do patch repairs.

How does an aluminum roof handle Penticton's summers and wildfire season?

Penticton is one of the driest cities in Canada: the airport averages 344.1 mm of precipitation a year (1991–2020 normals). Aluminum is not harmed by heat or dry air. On fire: Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, and the aluminum will not ignite. No roof is fireproof, and embers collect in gutters and vents, so keep those clear through the summer.

Do I need a building permit to re-roof in Penticton?

The City of Penticton's Building Bulletin 13-01 says no permit is needed for a "Re-roof for Single & Two family dwellings that do not alter the dead loads or slope of the existing roof structure". Structural roof work does need one. In Kaleden and Okanagan Falls, permits come from the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen; Okanagan Falls becomes its own district on November 6, 2026. We confirm the rules for your address before we book the job.

What does a metal roof cost in Penticton?

Our metal roof cost page lists price ranges by profile from our own BC jobs. Every roof is different in its structure and other conditions, so treat those numbers as a rough guide only. An accurate price needs a roof consultation, either on Zoom or in your home, and you get it in writing.

What does "Penticton's Best Roof®" mean?

I.E.L. Manufacturing Ltd., which owns the Interlock brand, holds Best Roof® as a registered trademark. It is the name of the Interlock® roof in Canada. "Penticton's Best Roof®" means that same aluminum roof, installed in Penticton by Interlock Metal Roofing (BC) Ltd. A brand name, then, and not a ranking.
